Firework sparkler on the 4th of July

A day off or a day overwhelmed

Happy 4th of July.

Every year, the 4th and many other holidays come around. For those that have the day off, it’s a time of vacation and hopefully staying safe during the fireworks or other festivities. For those that work regular jobs, or participate in events, it can be a downright crazy day.

For homesteaders, the chores don’t stop just because a day changed.

As part of your business strategy, you get to decide what holidays you want to open your business. You could easily choose to avoid certain holidays and save a little sanity. Or the decision to be open is ruled by the potential chance to reach more customers and strengthen the business while everyone else is on break.

Being open for holidays can easily make more profit than a regular day, if you are in the right place and sell the right items. For others, it would be a total waste of time. Not much of a market for most services while everyone else is on break.

There are also the inherited issues with being seen on holidays. Social media is so overwhelmed, posts rarely get seen. And those that do all wish you a great holiday. Even ads can be risky, more cost for less people shopping.

Even simple things like this newsletter are unlikely to see the same open rates as normal. People are not in the office.

In the end, you know your business the best. After a few years in business, you probably have a pretty darn good idea of how each holiday will roll. The key is to use caution and not bet the farm on a holiday sale, unless you happen to be selling fireworks on the 4th 😉 Holidays are risky business. Study your audience well and never let your guard down. Because the minute you expect a perfect holiday, life will throw in the curve ball.
