As a small business it’s easy to get trapped in doing everything.
We saw our competition appearing on Linked In so we created an account on Linked In. We heard this huge event propelled this other business we know to success, so we want to do it too. And soon, we have no minutes left in our day, or even worse negative minutes and we are behind on everything.
We make our lives full of complexity, thinking it will do better. But the reality is the opposite.
We only have so much time each day. In an ideal world, we would not be killing ourselves and working every minute of the day. Heck, we went into business so we wouldn’t have to spend every second working.
When you spread yourself too thin, everything suffers. Instead of posting a long heartfelt post on Instagram with great pictures, you post five short half-baked things on a dozen different platforms.
People notice the lack of interest and the lack of effort. Even if you are trying your best, your best won’t be good enough for long enough with so many things going on.
Stop pretending to be larger than you are. Big businesses have a team dedicated to areas of their marketing. They might even have a whole group of people just for social media. You don’t have that luxury.
Decide what is most important to your business and focus on it. What moves your needle. That’s where you need to be. It doesn’t matter where your competitors are. It matters where your customers are.
So, what moves your needle? And are you spending enough time there?
